Who can participate in Motown Mission Experience?
Youth groups with students entering 7th-12th grades are invited to join us each Summer as we gather in the City of Detroit to do home repair and service work for the people of Motown.
College groups are invited to register for our new season of Alternative Spring Break weeks starting in February and March 2010.
Adult groups (30 yrs +)can participate in a "Nehemiah Project" week of service and cultural immersion.
Overview
- While in Detroit your group will:
- Live at Metropolitan UMC,
- Work at sites from 9am-3pm daily.
- take afternoon trips to the most fun places in "The D",
- and serve God by serving others!
- Types of work include home repair, greening work, and/or feeding ministries. Motown works with each group to ensure a level and style of work that fits best with your youth. More intensive home repair/construction projects are reserved for high school groups.
Accommodations
Motown Mission 2010 accommodations will be at Metropolitan UMC in the New Center Area of Detroit. We use a number of Sunday School rooms there as dormitories. We have access to about 15 cots for use by adults, youth and any adults who would like to bring air mattresses are invited to do so. Guys and girls usually are on two separate floors. Showers are in the basement by the gymnasium and are individual stalls.
Meals are included in the $250/person cost (Sunday Dinner - through Saturday breakfast). Breakfasts are continental, lunches are bag lunches made in the mornings and taken to the work sites, and dinners are cooked and provided by volunteers from supporting churches.
Work Projects
All groups will be engaged in economic disaster recovery work projects.
Motown Mission Experience partners with two primary home repair agencies in the Joy-Southfield and Brightmoor neighborhoods of Detroit, MI. These partners prepare lists of work projects, home owners, and other volunteers that we partner with for work projects.
Other partners include feeding and greening ministries like the Friends of Detroit garden group, and Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
